Black Friday Travel Deals

Today, I went to Best Buy and saw someone camped out in front with a tent and chair, waiting for Black Friday to commence.

I have better things to do!  Like, browse Pinterest for three hours!

I hate Black Friday.  I was annoyed with the crowds at the store this past weekend, there’s no way I could fight through a sea of people for 100 bucks off a DVD player.

However, I do advocate shopping online for travel deals starting tomorrow, now known as “White Wednesday.”  You’ll find the best deals at my top three picks for stress-free holiday shopping.

3. Hotels.com

Deals at Hotels.com include accommodations in Chicago, Houston, and New Orleans, among other spots.  These deals look super cheap (Dallas digs as low as $38 per night), but they also expire super fast (must be booked by Wednesday, travel needs to take place over the holiday weekend).  Click here for more information.

2. Southwest

If my friend, Kate, saw this, she would launch into a really long story about how she loves Southwest so much.  But, you do have to love this sale.

When you book a vacation package through Southwest, you can get two nights free in the Tampa area or 40% off on Disney accommodations!  Again, you must book fast, the Tampa deal is done on Wednesday, and the Disney deal lasts only one more week after that.  Find out more here.

1. Travelocity

Travelocity’s offer extends a little longer than most travel deals.

You get $100 your holiday travel (must be taken by January 2) if you spend more than $1,000.  There are, obviously, terms and conditions, but I’ve racked $1,000 up quickly in travel expenses, so this is a good way to save.

Since I’m not important enough to get press releases, I’ve also rounded up some great travel websites with even more deals.

Deal News says JetBlue and Virgin America offer great Black Friday specials, but you may be better off booking hotels instead of flights.

Budget Travel actually inspired me to write this article, but their deals are pretty specific to certain areas of the country.  This article does mention a few places in Florida though.  It also gives you a time specific window in which you need to do your travel shopping.

Peter Greenberg has a very well-organized article detailing, not only the best travel deals, but exactly what days to find the specials (personally, I think the Howard Johnson deal at the end of the story is the most useful because it applies to HoJo’s across the country and not just one in area).

And what’s a vacation without your luggage?  This article tells you how to find the best deal on suitcases and other bags to tote your clothing to faraway locales.

Total Cost: Depends

Best Deal: The HoJo deal that applies to hotels across the country

Do you plan on hitting the stores this Black Friday, hitting the web, or just going to a bar like I did last year?

White Christmas – See Snow in South Florida for Free!

An event I did not mention yesterday in my rundown of the holiday season was the snow at CityPlace.  It “fell” last night for the first time and will continue all the way until New Year’s Eve.  I have to say, the snowfall was way better than I expected.

You can see the snow glistening in the light

Nothing says "holidays" like a martini!

You can see the colorful fountain right below the Christmas tree

But, this is Florida, and the snow doesn’t make it to the ground very well in 70 degree temperatures, so for the best viewing experience, I suggest the second floor.

I also suggest a hot drink with whipped cream, no matter what the temperature, because it is the holidays after all.

Total Cost: $20 for drinks and apps at Brewzzi

Best Deal: Seeing snow in Florida for free!

Holidays in Palm Beach County - Celebrate for Free!

The Thanksgiving preparations haven’t yet started, let alone finished, but Christmas is already in the air.  In fact, tonight, the tree in CityPlace was lit up for the first time and the first snow fell!

This picture is actually from 2010, but you get the picture
So, what better way to celebrate the season than by participating in the free holiday festivities?  Here’s a breakdown of the holiday events going down in Palm Beach County, alphabetized by city.

Boca Raton

Courtesy of City of Boca Raton's website
Friday, November 23, 5:30pm
Holiday Lighting Extravaganza

At Mizner Park Amphitheater, you won’t just find a tree lighting, it’s a virtual tree lighting.  I’m not really sure what that means, but leave it to Boca to not actually have those pesky pine needles to pick up.  There will also be fireworks and “optical illusions” according to the city’s website.  The lighting celebration starts at 7:30pm.

Wednesday, December 5
Holiday Street Parade

The parade route stretches on Federal Highway from SE 8th Street north to Mizner Park.  Not sure if that virtual tree will still be around, or what.

Saturday, December 8, 6:30pm
Holiday Boat Parade

The waterway parade starts at the Delray-Boca border at the C-15 Canal and travels south to the Hillsboro Boulevard Bridge.  If you don’t own a mansion on the Intracoastal in Boca, you can snag bleacher seating at Red Reef Park (Red Reef Park normally has a $20 parking fee, not sure if that will be applicable this night or not).

Boynton Beach

Saturday, December 1, 5pm
Street Parade, Tree Lighting, and Concert

The fun in Boynton starts at 5pm with the holiday parade down Federal Highway.  I live off Federal Highway, but unfortunately the parade is not in my neck of the woods.  The parade will start on SE 12th and head north to Ocean Avenue.  Then at 6:30pm, the tree lighting takes place at Ocean Avenue Amphitheater.  Right after that, you can jam out to a concert on Ocean Avenue hosted by Virginia and Jason from Wild 95.5.  I hate to be a stalker, but I really like the KVJ show, so I’m probably going to stalk them.

Friday, December 7th, 6:30pm
Boynton and Delray Beach Holiday Boat Parade

I literally have the best seat in the house for this parade because it starts at the Boynton Inlet, which I can see right from my dock.

Best seat in the house - we brought wine, of course!
Now, the parade isn’t really something to write home about in the sense of the boats.  They are fun to see, all lit up, but there are usually only a few, maybe about 15.

Very hard to capture by camera!
Still, chilling on the dock behind your house and watching a boat parade is pretty sweet.  Let me know if anyone wants to come over, I’ll bring the cooler!  The parade ends at the Delray Beach/Boca border (the same place where the Boca boat parade begins)

Tree Lighting

It’s quite the sight… see the 100-foot tall tree light up for the first time this season!  The tree is located in Old School Square, right off Atlantic Avenue.  In the picture above, you can see me rapping with Santa a few years back.  If you can’t make the tree lighting ceremony, you can see the tree lit up all the way until January 10 from 10am to 10pm daily.

Friday, December 7th, 6:30pm
Boynton and Delray Beach Holiday Boat Parade

See the Boynton Beach section above.

Saturday, December 8th, 6pm
Holiday Parade and Menorah Lighting

The parade takes place along Atlantic Avenue.  The Menorah Lighting will be at Old School Square, where you can also see the 100-foot tree and maybe even take in a little ice skating (warning: the rink is very small and is made of plastic, not ice).

Jupiter

Saturday, December 1, 8pm
Holiday Boat Parade

The parade runs from Palm Beach, just south of the North Palm Beach Marina and travels up the Intracoastal to Jupiter.  There are several points for the general, non-boat-owning public to view the parade, including Sawfish Bay Park and Lighthouse Park.  The parade starts in Palm Beach at 6pm and should arrive in Jupiter about 8pm.

A Travel App for Cheap Fuel (Maybe Even Free!)

It’s hard to be an Economical Explorer if you can’t travel around cheaply.  And part of traveling is driving.  Did you know there is a place in Florida where right this second people are paying on $3.10 for a gallon of gas?  Likewise, some people are forking over $4.49.

This is a picture from 2007 in San Francisco and some people
are actually paying less money for gas than back then!

I’ve done a lot of traveling around Florida the past couple of weeks and have figured out where to buy fuel to cut on costs.  For instance, that $3.10 price per gallon?  It’s in Central Florida, Leesburg to be exact, about a hour outside Orlando.  Leesburg also has stations selling gas at $3.13 and $3.15.

On the other end of the spectrum, drivers are paying $4.49 in, none other than, South Florida.

That should come as no shock to anyone living down here.  When I travel basically anywhere in Florida, I do not fill up before I leave.  I run on fumes until I can make it to Central Florida, Ft. Myers, or Tampa, all known to have cheaper prices than my neck of the woods.

Helping me with my gas price decisions, this website.  The site is run by Gas Buddy, which produces the single-best gas reporting iPhone app around.  It was the first app I ever downloaded on my iPhone and consistently ranks as the number one download *free* travel application in the App Store.

And it’s ridiculously simple to use.

Just click on that little green gas pump and Gas Buddy shows you where to find the cheapest gas nearby.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Costco or
BJ's membership, so it looks like I'm
going to have to fill up in Lake Worth
for $3.39

Don’t agree with the gas price listed?  You can change it yourself by clicking on the station, then on “update.”

And here’s where the free part comes in.  After signing up for Gas Buddy, every time you report a correct gas price, you earn 150 points.  For every 1,000 points you earn, you can buy a “ticket” for a $250 pre-paid gas card.  Every week, Gas Buddy has a drawing for one lucky person to win free gas.

Now, this is a nationwide website, so I’m not really sure of your odds of actually winning.  But, I play the Florida Lottery and my odds of winning that are 1 in 22 million, so I figure, what the hey?  In reality, the odds of getting attacked by a shark are 1 in 11.5 million (according to Discovery News), so unfortunately I’ll probably have to deal with that before I get any free money.

Anyhoo, you also get points if you refer a friend, so let's start a buddy system and explore economically together!

Total Cost: Gas Buddy App is free!

Best Deal: Figuring out gas is cheaper by my work (in West Palm Beach) than by my house (in Boynton Beach)

Total Wine and More Classes - Deals on Wine, Free Food, and a Chance to be a Sommelier

I am apparently on a giant wine kick over here.  In the last week, I’ve told you about the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, Delray Beach’s Wine and Seafood Festival, and today, how you can pay $25 and get at least eight glasses of wine, food, and discounts on alcohol.

I'm in heaven!

Sound like a dream come true?  It goes down at Total Wine and More several times a year.  Though I’ve been to many of these classes, the best one by far, is “Celebrate with Champagne and Sparkling.”

We're regulars at this class!
How convenient… this class is coming up on Thursday at most Total Wine and More stores in South Florida (definitely including Boynton Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Stuart, North Miami, Miami (Pinecrest), Pembroke Pines and Naples).  Most locations offer the class again on Saturday, December 8 as well.

After paying your flat rate of $25, you get a wine tasting packet, complete with tasting sheets, so you can feel like a sommelier.

Look, I wrote "so crisp!" as if I actually know
what I'm talking about!
The Total Wine and More employees pour each bottle quite liberally (maybe not a full glass, but close) starting with a less expensive choice first.  At my class, we got Vignal Prosecco, a $9.99 bottle.  Then the employees guide you through the tasting.  What is the color?  The bouquet?  The flavor?  Do you taste apple or apricot?

I think Colleen tastes a hint of pear...
The employees keep pouring as you keep tasting… an $8.99 bottle of Conde de Caralt Rose, a $15.99 bottle of Louis Boullot Blanc de Noirs, a $29.99 bottle of Montaudon (one of the cheapest real champagnes you can get!).

Montaudon is one of my favorite champagnes!
All the while, attendees of the class can also munch on food provided by the store.  I’ve been to tastings where the food is as simple as a fruit and cheese platter from Jason’s deli, to the food at this particular tasting, which was prepared by store employees (think lemon butter shrimp, mini frittatas, and bruschetta with mushrooms).

Finally, the crème de la crème.  A 1999 Mailly Grand Cru Les Echansons that sells for $79.99 a bottle.  This, I’m told, is better than Dom Pérignon.  But, the last bottle isn’t where the class ends, but almost begins.  After the tasting, you can buy any of the wines sampled for a discount.  The discount depends on the price, but that $79.99 bottle was $10 off.  Even the less expensive $8.99 bottles were a dollar off.

Okay, maybe we go a little crazy when it comes
to the buying part, SUE ME!
So, for your $25 class fee, you got about eight glasses of wine, food, and a discount on however many bottles you want to buy that night.

Total Cost: $25

Best Deal: Chatting with Total Wine employees after the class and getting them to pour you even more champagne that was leftover from the class

How do you feel about champagne?  Do you have as much of a love affair as I do with bubbles?

Delray Beach’s 1st Annual Wine and Seafood Festival

Sometimes when an event occurs for the first time ever, you have to work out some kinks and mishaps.

I think it’s pretty safe to say Delray Beach’s 1st Annual Wine and Seafood Festival went off pretty much without a hitch.  You can call it the Delray Affair Lite.

More than a two-hundred local business sold items like
clothing, painted signs and even wine chillers.
You didn’t have to pay a dime to get inside.  The unique location gave businesses east of the bridge an opportunity to benefit from the large influx of people (all of the other events in Delray are on Atlantic Avenue west of the Intracoastal).  Festival-goers could stop at one of several tents along the way to sample wines.

One tent had a wine and food tasting that rotated well-known restaurants and caterers in our area.

Doesn't get anymore famous than this, folks.  This chef is
probably most well-know for... catering my wedding! But,
he also had a wine and food pairing at the festival that looked
unbelievably delicious!
Speaking of my wedding, the person who organized this whole event was none other than my other wedding caterer, who goes by the name of “Irish.”  Irish was able to snag some bracelets so we could drink free.

We put the bracelets to good use.  Thank you, Irish, for
contributing to my on-going alochol problem.
We spent most of our time at a mobile, yes, mobile, bar on Atlantic Ave.  A bar you can drive around?  What will they think of next?!

One of those lovely bartenders also served at my wedding... thanks Mary Ann!
Even the pups could get in on the action.

This is my niece-dog, Bailey, who is bellying up
to the bar
Even though it was free to enter, there are some costs:

Wine: $8 per glass or $50 for a bracelet (that’s according to the Sun-Sentinel)
Food: Varied, I paid $12 for conch fritters (delicious!)
Seminars: $20 for a wine and food pairing
Parking: $5

And here’s what actually paid:

Total Cost: $12 for food, $5 for parking = $17

Best Deal: Drinking for free!

The Best Deals for Hotels On and Off Disney Property

When you go to Walt Disney World, you have two choices.  You can splurge and stay at the best of the best, or save and risk staying at the worst of the worst.

If you saw yesterday’s post on the climbing prices at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, you’ll see why I always save.  Gotta keep that economical thing somewhat in check.  Luckily, I also have a Disney "expert" who can tell you where to splurge.

Save

I’ve stayed at medley of hotels around Walt Disney World that cost less than $50 a night.  Here are the top three:

#3 Howard Johnson Express Inn Suites Lake Front Park
4836 West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, Kissimmee

Google Maps comes through for me when my memory fails,
yet again
Distance from Disney: 9 miles and 13 minutes
Rank on Trip Advisor: #48 of 165 hotels in Kissimmee
Average Price: $44/night

This hotel is not as close to Walt Disney World as some of the others, but it is directly across the street from a Target.  When we stayed there, there was a group of bikers staying nearby, which was a little awkward on the outside.  Inside though, the rooms were clean and neat.

#2 Maingate Lakeside Resort
7769 West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, Kissimmee

Distance from Disney: 5.5 miles and 9 minutes
Rank on Trip Advisor: #59 of 165 hotels in Kissimmee
Average Price: $42/night

I have stayed at this hotel several times.  The location is great, the rooms are clean, and the front desk is beyond nice.  Even first thing in the morning, the clerk I spoke with was exceptionally cheery.  I probably, was not, after spending a day running around to Disney parks, but props to her for dealing with difficult guests.

#1 Ramada Gateway Kissimmee
7470 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, Kissimmee

Distance from Disney: 5 miles and 9 minutes
Rank on Trip Advisor: #39 of 165 hotels in Kissimmee
Average Price: $46/night

This hotel is pretty close to Walt Disney World, without actually being on Disney property.  I have stayed here several times before for my Disney experiences and it’s even rated as a “Walt Disney World Good Neighbor Hotel” (this is a good site to check out cheaper hotels that still get the Disney stamp of approval).  The inside is clean and there are mini-refrigerators in every room (which is important for drinking mimosas).

This hotel is not to be confused with the Ramada Maingate across the street.

We stayed there once and got slapped with a “resort fee” of about $20, even though the pool was completely closed.  Not much of a resort.

Splurge

If you prefer to stay in a Disney hotel, Economical Explorer’s Disney Expert, my Mickey-loving friend, Amy, has picks in each of Walt Disney World’s budget ranges (deluxe, moderate, value)

Deluxe

The Animal Kingdom Lodge works great for anyone who loves animals.  From the comfort of your room, you can view creatures from the window, just roaming around the property.

Courtesy of Amy S.

Different rooms feature different animals outside, so if you're into zebras, like Amy, make sure you request the zebra zone when you book.  No matter what creature you see outside the window, you’ll be in for a safari-type experience from the outside…

Right down to the bedspreads inside...

Courtesy of Amy S. - Can you believe there is someone else in
the world who takes pictures of every hotel room she's been to
BESIDES me?  I think that's why Amy and I are friends!

Average price: $314/night

Moderate

Caribbean Beach is like staying in the islands, Disney-style.

Courtesy of Amy S.

Here, you can stay in different Caribbean countries like Trinidad and Martinique.  Each little area has its own pool and you can walk around the beaches and chill out in the hammocks.

Courtesy of Amy S.

Inside, the rooms have the same tropical vibe.

Courtesy of Amy S. - Blender not included, but if you're smart,
you'll bring one!

Average price: $199/night

Value

Amy’s pick for the least expensive place to stay on Disney property goes to Art of Animation.  Unfortunately, we don’t have pictures of that because A) I’m too cheap to ever stay in a Disney resort and B) Amy saw the inside while visiting family but didn’t take pictures.  So, take her word on it.  It’s brand-new and features the major Disney movies like Cars, Lion King and Little Mermaid.  Amy’s family stayed in a suite modeled after Lion King.  Unfortunately, because this resort is new, it’s also a little bit more expensive, at about $232/night.

If you’re looking to save a bundle while being at a Disney resort, Amy’s next pick goes to the All-Star Music Resort.

It’s themed around… well, music.  And even though it's Disney, you won't find as many kids gallivanting around (OMG, when did I turn into a 70-year-old lady?  Who says "gallivanting" anymore?).   The same cannot be said for the All-Star Sports Resort where a lot of youth sports teams stay.

Average price: $120/night

Here’s a full rundown of all Disney resorts if you did not enjoy my comprehensive guide and are  curious as to what else is out there.

Total Cost: $120-$314 per night to stay in a Disney resort
Best Deal: Florida residents and annual pass holders can get better deals, check Mousesavers.com for more information.

Would you pay extra money to be closer to the Mouse?  Or do you prefer to save where you can when visiting Walt Disney World?

Epcot Food and Wine Festival – New Booths, Climbing Prices and How to Save

If you haven’t experienced the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, you must.  Stat.  Except this is the last weekend for the event, so put it on your calendar for next year right now.

I make sure to attend every year.  In fact, this is the 6th year I have been.  And every year, I go with my dear friend, Amy.  She’s just as much of an economical explorer as I am.

The first year we went to the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, I was very testy.  Mainly because we had spent the whole morning at Animal Kingdom and were starving by the time we got to Epcot.  But, I was a hardcore vegetarian and there were very few vegetarian options.

Perturbed in a pear!

Six years later, that’s changed.

Did you know "terra" means "earth" in Latin
and "Tara" means "earth in Celtic? This stand
was clearly meant for me!

In 2012, for the first time ever, Disney introduced a vegan booth.  The options were Tri’k'n Chick’n Curry with Basmati Rice and Chili Colorado with House-made Chips and Cashew Cheese.  I got the chili.

It was quite delicious!

Also, unlike back in 2007, Disney now notes whether an item is vegetarian on the country’s board.

That green "V" means vegetarian.  Epcot started doing this in 2010

Also new this year was the Florida Local booth. Amy got the White Corn Arepa with Mangalitsa Pork Rillette and I got Florida Shrimp Ceviche.

The food was a score.  We also got Florida Orange
Groves Hurricane Class 5, Florida White Sangria.
That was was too sweet for my liking.

The new stands were delicious, but you can’t forget the oldies, but goodies, like France, which has been around since Epcot Food & Wine started back in 1996.

I got the Escargots Persillade en Brioche; Amy got Coq au Vin and the Crème Brûlée au Chocolat au Lait.  We both got the Sparkling Pomegranate Kir.

The Sparkling Pomegranate Kir is so awesome we started
making it at home.  Just mix sparkling wine with PAMA
Pomegranate Liquer.

Unfortunately, France is where we experienced the biggest shock of our Food & Wine experience.

Amy spent more than $17 at this stand.
I spent $13.

As delicious as the food tastes, Epcot Food & Wine is not especially economical.

These receipts total up to about $100 for each
of us.  Ouch!

Prices for Food & Wine certainly have increased over the years.

The price of Spanakopita in Greece has increased about 33% in just six years.  These days, you really have to use your discretion at Food & Wine.  Take Japan for instance.

The Spicy Tuna roll was $4.95, which I feel is a much better deal than I can get at most sushi places.

At the Hops and Barley stand, we got a delicious dessert for just $1.50.

In Italy, the Ravioli di Formaggio all' Emiliana was a little pricey at $5.50, but check out the portion size!

Same goes for the alcohol.  The most we paid for a single drink was $8.75 for the Iron Horse Fairy Tale Cuvée in Scandinavia.

The rice pudding was $2.75 and very yummy!

We even saw some drinks go for more than $12 (Moët & Chandon at the Desserts and Champagne stand).  But we also wine as cheap as $2 at the Cheese booth and purchased wine for just $3 in Australia.

Another way to save money, besides just being particular, is through the Disney Dining Plan.

Anything with the little purple and white box is eligible for
purchase under the Disney Dining Plan

The catch?  You have to come to Disney through a Vacation Club Package.  Amy tried to explain to me how to use this plan, but I was a little confused, so I think this website explains it best (you need to scroll to the bottom).

Disney also offers free and low-cost seminars which you can find out about through The Disney Food Blog as well.  In fact, The Disney Food Blog has lots of ideas for eating at Disney!  But my best advice is to pick and choose until you find the perfect pair.

This is where I found the perfect pairing: Seared
Mahi Mahi with Jasmine Rice and Marqués de
Cáceres ‘Satinela’ wine in Singapore for $6.75

Total Cost: Approximately $100

Best Deal: Desserts like Yogurt Panna Cotta with Orange Cake, Lemon Custard Verrine with Blueberry Compote and Dark Chocolate Mousse with Chili and Salted Caramel for only $1.50 each ($3.75 if you do the Dessert Trio)!

I think it’s worth it, but what do you think about the prices at Epcot Food and Wine?  Would you shell out the dough?
